2-Step Equation Solver

Choose an operation for both sides. The left side will be simplified first, then you must calculate the new right-hand side before continuing.

Working history

Step 0

Do the same thing to both sides

Try to get the equation into the form x = number.

Equation controls

Classroom prompt

Ask: “What happened to the left side?” and then “What must happen to the right side?” Students need to practise both the equation move and the arithmetic that keeps the two sides balanced.

Note: dividing by zero is blocked because it is undefined. After a student chooses an operation, the program simplifies the left side first and leaves the right side blank until the student calculates it correctly. New random questions include positive and negative solutions and starting equations with x first or the constant first.
